About the Author
Dr James Houston is a doctor, writer and author of Staying Human: What No One Tells You About Becoming a Doctor.
He studied medicine at the University of Manchester and completed an intercalated BSc in Urgent and Emergency Care at the University of Plymouth. He has worked as a doctor since 2023, with experience across emergency, acute and hospital medicine.
James wrote Staying Human after trying to make sense of training, burnout and the quieter realities of becoming a doctor. His writing explores pressure, responsibility and self-worth, as well as the parts of life that can become smaller when work asks too much.
He is interested in medical education, reflective practice and the emotional side of demanding work. He is also preparing to work in Australia, with an interest in learning from different healthcare systems, broadening his clinical perspective and building a life with more room for balance, creativity and reflection.
The Staying Human Project
Staying Human began as a book for doctors and medical students, but it has grown into a wider space for people trying to stay human inside demanding work and modern life.
The book is the foundation. This site is the next step: a growing collection of resources for studying, working and living with more steadiness.
Over time, the project will include practical tools, reflective prompts and honest resources on learning, responsibility, burnout, identity and life beyond work.
